I wish to remove the plastic housing around the gear shift. Does it simply pop off with a little coaxing? Reason: Car does not have corresponding indicator in instrument cluster. Not safe to glance down & difficult to see red lights during the day & a mystery at night. Would like to install assorted colored bulbs.

Take the ashtray out and look forward through the gap now created,I think you should now see 2 phillips head screws side by side.Loosen the screws ,no need to take them right out,the back of the housing should now be liftable then the front can also extricated. The gear knob just unscrews(standard thread). let me know if this is ok or you need more.

Thanks for your tip. But before I proceed, are the lights/bulbs removeable?
