Default Service histories

In the past three weeks I have looked at maybe ten DB7 Vantage Volantes offered for sale by both main and non main dealers. Nearly 50% of them are lacking a full documented service history. By that I mean that the car may well have an official Aston Martin works serv ice book with all the stamps in it, but the receipts, bills and MOT's etc. are missing. The missing documents are nearly always explained as being missing due to the Data Protection Act not allowing the previous owner(s) details to be disclosed, but this information is, of course, available from the log book. I am unhappy about the missing paperwork but am I worrying without good cause ? Is a properly stamped service book sufficient to satisfy any potential purchasers I may wish to sell the car to in the years ahead ?

Marlin,

If you are located in the US, all Aston dealers maintain a database containing the service history for the cars they service. All you will need is the VIN # when talking with the service department. The VIN is the key and they can tell you what was done along with the dates the services were performed to the vehicle.

I hope this helps.

Marlin,

Chasp is right for Main Dealer maintained cars, But DB7's are old enough now for some of them to be looked after by specialist's, this is when documented receipts are invaluable to you and any future purchaser...You said 50% are missing full history, My advice is walk away from those and concentrate on the 5 car's that have all the documentation with them.

I recently went through what you are experiencing now but with a much old model, I dismissed 7 car's over the phone and another 4 when I got to look at the so called full histories, If you hunt hard enough you'll find the right car for you with the correct documents and you'll have no issues when it comes time to sell.
