DB9 breakdown - Door Handle Part question

Hi guys, I am currently in the process of dismantling a db9 for a University engineering project, and have came across a part that nobody relating to the project can understand or fathom.

It relates to the door handle mechanism, and seems to prevent the door handle from opening/being accessible. It is not connected to any electrics, motors, or the lock in any way.
