I've often wondered about that. I thought it had something to do with the central locking system because it happens when I pull the driver door handle.

I guess your unit is -/+ paddle shift instead of MT ? Mine is -/+ unit and with the same sound, that is the sound from your gearbox hydraulic pump. When your engine is off, the hydraulic oil will store in the tank, whenever you open the driver side door, it will pump into the actuator for clutch engage.
This apply on my E46 M3 SMG and my previous Alfa Romeo 156 Selespeed gearbox also, all is using Single Clutch Sequential Manual Gear Box..
